A Poem | The Gold Rush

The Gold Rush

Would we be so lost in the moonlight wanderings
Tired on tires on asphalt and wondering where.
As rubber rotates underfoot, the stars stay put
Through a sunroof we can’t see through. My
Memories take me back to times I was alone —
Fully alone inside one car on a road speeding
Through towns and cities and neighborhoods
With names on signs posted somewhere.

Reminisces take me back to the places I
Didn’t need to speak as planets and canyons
And deer I didn’t know rolled by on side streets.
But I could never end up nowhere. And,
Eventually, the sun turned the sky lavender
Until it matched the red of my eyes and I realized
I was somewhere with signs posted and
Mileage markers that people stole on highways.

And when the sky turns blue, we’re confronted
With the realities of roadsides.

I found a street that leads
Out, across, up, through the sunroof. And I drove
Until the sun turned the sky blue and
Roadsides showed deer hides and breakthroughs.
And still, it led me home.

Stay gold,
Sabrina
